Proverbs 1:20-33, Proverbs Series
The desire to fit in and belong is a very natural human trait. God designs us to relate socially to others, to be in the community. Here in Proverbs, we see the temptation is framed in a call to join the community. A legitimate human need is being appealed to and demands fulfillment. But the problem is that God has a way and means to fulfill legitimate human needs within healthy and proper boundaries. It must never come at the expense of disobedience to God’s word, which ultimately brings death. Why is the call of the crowd so seductive? We often take our cues of who we are, in other words, our sense of identity and value, based on how others relate to us. Therefore, it’s critical who we choose to join up with.
