[00:00:00] The title of my message, how to be blessed in all that you do. [00:00:04] It sounds like a title that's like wishful thinking because how do you be blessed in all that you do? But you know, this morning, you know, we want to all be blessed in everything we do. If we could be blessed in everything we could do. If our kids could be blessed, we knew our kids could be blessed in everything that they did. You know, I think that we would probably try to seek out how that could possibly take place. But this morning our focus is going to be on exactly that, being blessed in all you do. [00:00:34] We're looking at James, chapter one, verse 19 through 27, with the main focus on verses 22 to 25. [00:00:41] And the challenge this morning is about not only being a hearer of the Word, but rather being actively doing what God speaks to us through His Word in the main verse in the book of James, and the main verse in the chapter one of James is verse 22 that says, do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. [00:01:05] Do what it says. [00:01:07] Faith is more than something we believe, it's something we do. [00:01:12] A political writer, Hannah Arendt attended the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the German officer who orchestrated much of the Holocaust. [00:01:24] Appointed in 1934 to the Jewish section of the SS, Eichmann was deeply involved in the planning and execution of the final solution to the Jewish question. [00:01:35] He efficiently organized the deportation of Jews into ghettos and concentration camps, taking pride in his role in the deaths of 6 million European Jews. [00:01:47] And when Arend entered the courtroom, she was anticipating to meet a monster, somebody that was totally deranged. [00:01:55] But what stunned her was that in reality, Eichmann appeared not to be a devil, but just an ordinary bureaucrat executing orders without question. [00:02:06] In her book, Eichmann in Jerusalem, Arendt provides an unnerving account of the unreflective living. [00:02:14] Eichmann insisted that he was not a murderer. [00:02:17] Rather, his conscience compelled him to submit unquestionably to the demands of his superiors. [00:02:24] And this mindless obedience led to a systematic deportation of countless of lives to their deaths. [00:02:33] And what's horrifying is that Eichmann was diagnosed as normal. [00:02:37] He had a young, a loving family, and he was by all appearances an unremarkable man. [00:02:44] Yet this normal individual became the architect of some of humanity's most grievous atrocities. [00:02:52] Because he lacked a self awareness and critical reflection on his actions and moral implications. [00:02:59] His ambition was to please authority. To achieve success overshadowed his ethical consideration. [00:03:08] And this historical lesson resonates Deeply. And it serves as a stark reminder of how people can become capable of great wrongdoing when they lack self awareness and become driven solely by ambition. [00:03:23] And this raises a few uncomfortable questions for us this morning. [00:03:28] How often do we, in our pursuit of personal gain, overlook the moral dimensions of our choices? [00:03:35] You know, I had to resist this temptation of taking cash for jobs when I was running my construction company. I had a construction company for several years and we were all over the country doing different types of jobs. And so often people would want you to take cash, just deduct the GST off and take and take cash for the job. [00:03:56] And in one way you would fill your money, your pocket with money. But in another sense, you know, it was the worst thing to do. It was just like the most uncomfortable thing. But that temptation was there all the time. And. [00:04:12] But it's these temptations that we need to resist. And we need to hear the scriptures when they are warning us, like Genesis 4, 7, like when God was. [00:04:25] Warning Cain and he says to him, but if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. It desires to have you, but you must rule over it. [00:04:36] It's our responsibility to resist the devil and to take responsibility for what we're doing. [00:04:42] James says, submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. [00:04:48] I have never forgotten the message that Billy Graham once preached. [00:04:53] He had a theme, and he repeated this theme over and over and over in his message. [00:04:58] And his message was from Deuteronomy, chapter 32, 23, where it says, but if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord, and you may be sure that your sins will find you out. [00:05:11] His theme was, and you may be sure your sins will find you out. And you may be sure your sins will find you out. [00:05:18] A guy picked up an alarm clock, he would use an analogy such as a guy would pick up an alarm clock, put it in his pocket, going out the door, the alarm would go off, and you may be sure your sins will find you out. And he went over analogy after analogy after analogy, probably for 10 minutes. And you may be sure your sins will find you out. [00:05:39] You know, I've never forgot that and it's always been an impression in my mind. And praise God, it's a great verse. [00:05:47] You may be sure your sins will find you out. [00:05:51] You know, how often do we take a complacent stance, focusing solely on our ambition while neglecting to weigh out the ethical implications of our actions? [00:06:01] Are we looking into a mirror the mirrors of the Scriptures and really allowing them to provoke in us deeper self examination. [00:06:13] Are we talking with the. Are we talking with the Holy Spirit? [00:06:17] Are we taking what the Holy Spirit is speaking to us and doing what he's telling us to do? Are we allowing the word of God to convict us and change us, recognizing that this is not our home, that our days here are numbered? There's one day when this life is going to be over. [00:06:36] Are we paying attention and thinking, okay, what we do here matters? [00:06:41] We cannot be content with thinking that it's okay that when the Holy Spirit speaks to us and that we don't need to pay attention, we can just shrug that off. That's a dangerous place to be. [00:06:52] And so Jesus Lord, we thank you that you say, Lord, that when your word goes out, it goes out, it accomplishes what it sets out to accomplish. [00:07:02] And you sent forth your word this morning, Father God, and you're sending your word forward this morning. We pray, Lord God, that you would take it and you would drive it into us, Father God, to the place where there is a dividing of the soul and the Spirit. [00:07:17] And as you judge the thoughts and the intents of our heart, Father God, help us to recognize that apart from you we can do nothing. [00:07:26] And we need you, Lord God, in order to live out this life the way that you are showing us that it is to be done. [00:07:35] We thank you Father for the guiding of your spirit and we thank you for your word. We pray that you would just help us to hear what your spirit's saying this morning as we go through these texts. In Jesus name, amen. [00:07:49] James 1:19 Dear brothers and sisters, take note of this. Everyone should be quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. [00:08:05] Therefore, get rid of all filth and evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the Word planted in you which can save you. Do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. [00:08:20] Anyone who listens to the Word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and and after looking at himself, he goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it. They will be blessed in what they do. [00:08:43] Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves and their religion is worthless. [00:08:51] Religion that God our Father accepts as Pure and faultless is this to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted from the world. [00:09:04] Now, Charles Finney, D.L. moody, and there were a lot of other evangelists were experiencing amazing revivals in the late 1800s, early 1900s. And something I noticed at reading these biographies was that those days they were having a real problem worldwide of drunkenness and people in general, they wouldn't come to the churches because all they would hear was that they were wretched sinners and they were destined for hell. [00:09:30] And Finney and others, they began to preach the Gospel message of grace and the other amazing things that Jesus did on their behalf and that people would come to him and just as they. That they could come to him just as they were, and that he would welcome them with open arms. [00:09:48] People started to experience freedom and hope and were responding to the Gospel message in droves for many years to come. [00:09:56] And the message has never changed. Jesus is still standing there with open arms, and he's saying, come just as you are, and he will set you free from the bondages that the enemy is working so hard to put so many people under. [00:10:12] People are being set free from the filth and destructiveness of sin. [00:10:17] James refers to the word of God as a liberating mirror, which helps us see ourselves clearly in the light of God's image. [00:10:26] And I have this cute little story here, and it sort of gives a picture of the subtleness of sin. And it's a bit of a stretch, but I think you'll get what I'm saying. [00:10:35] And it's kind of a funny little thing. A number of young girls began to use lipstick and were putting it on in the bathrooms in the schools. [00:10:44] And then after they put their lipstick on, they would press their lips to the mirrors, leaving dozens of little lip prints all over the mirrors. Well, finally, the principal decided something had to be done. And so she called the girls to the bathroom. She met them there with the custodian. She explained that these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian, who had to clean the mirrors every day. So then she says to demonstrate how difficult it was, she asked the custodian to clean one of these mirrors for these kids. Kids. So he took out a long handled brush, he dipped it in the toilet, and he scrubbed the mirror off. [00:11:25] Since then, there have been no more lip prints on the mirrors. [00:11:31] You know, generally speaking, we cannot see the destructiveness and the filth of sin, but in due time, it becomes very evident that the wages of death are Sin and it's not something that we can just shrug our shoulders at. And this is why it is so important that we let God's Word shape our understanding and our actions and who we are in our innermost beings. [00:11:57] James 1:25 says, but whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it and not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do. [00:12:10] It means making intentional choices and taking actions in our everyday lives that reflect the image of Christ. [00:12:18] From James perspective, the liberating mirror encourages an honest self reflection and should be spurring us on to action. [00:12:27] Focus on our faith can really help us grow spiritually, inspire us to do good things in our everyday lives. [00:12:36] Just like Amir shows us our true appearance, the Word of God reveals who we really are and encourages us to reflect love and truth out to our world. [00:12:48] It's essential for the Word to see us, for the world to see us. That Jesus says we are, we are the light of the world. He says, you are the light of the world. [00:13:00] A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. [00:13:03] How is it that we move from just glancing at the Word to allowing it to transform our hearts as a result of our outward lives? [00:13:14] These verses in James strike at the heart of our relationship with God's Word. It's easy to come to church and to sit here and hear these amazing sermons that Paul somehow comes up with week after week after week. That's amazing to me. You know, how the quality of his, the text, the scriptures and the preaching that we get. [00:13:33] You know, we can read our Bibles here and we can hear teachings and truths that resonate with us and we can give a hearty amen to them and maybe a message that is preached. You know, I have sensed that maybe I need to make an amends for an offense that I have caused or maybe I haven't recognized that somebody has offended me and I need to maybe go and speak to them. [00:13:57] You know, we nod in agreement during a sermon and perhaps take amazing notes. But then we return to our routines every Monday morning and then forgetting the very truth that we have just encountered. [00:14:09] And what James is challenging us here is that with an attitude that we have, that we're thinking that that might be okay, that we don't give a thought to that, that's okay, it's not okay. [00:14:20] And not following through with what the Holy Spirit has just revealed to us is not good. And that is the deception that James is talking about here. Do not merely listen to the Word and deceive yourself, do what it says. [00:14:42] Because if that inspiration does not translate into tangible actions, then we are only deceiving ourselves. [00:14:48] And that's not okay. [00:14:51] We have to stop. And we have to ask ourselves, you know, where am I at this morning? [00:14:56] Am I deceiving myself? [00:14:59] Proverbs 4:23 says, above all else, guard your heart, for everything that you do flows out from it. [00:15:07] You know, where is your heart this morning? [00:15:10] Matthew 14:6, 14:15. It says, for if I forgive other people when they have sinned against. [00:15:18] If you forgive them when they sinned against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you. [00:15:24] But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive you for your sins. [00:15:32] That's sobering text that we need to hear. [00:15:36] Just maybe the Word of God was quickened to you at some time and you heard in your heart, deal with that sin in your life, and the Holy Spirit nudged you to maybe look into freedom sessions or celebrate recovery to get the support that you need to get past the hurt or the reason why you have the problem that you have. [00:15:57] Because God wants to set us free, and he doesn't want to set us free in 10 years from now. He wants to set you free right now. And he can and he will. [00:16:07] But he's saying, check out this area of ministry. He knows what he's doing and why he's sending us, where he's sending us. He could do it instantly, but he's got reasons for why he does what he does. [00:16:18] Maybe you're going to go to a certain area of ministry, you're going to experience healing, and you're going to discover, hey, there's a lot of people here that need what I just received, and nobody can give it to them better than you after you've been taken from it. [00:16:32] Don't take this nudging lightly. [00:16:35] Listen to him and be healed in Jesus name. If we go on ignoring the nudging, eventually we get to the place where we don't sense any nudging at all. [00:16:45] And James is saying to us, do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. [00:16:51] Do what it says. [00:16:53] The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our lives, guiding and teaching and convicting us in various ways. [00:17:01] And I heard a saying years ago, the destiny is the journey. We never arrive on this side of heaven. [00:17:09] It's a work. And it's like our marriages. We can never take our marriages for granted. [00:17:15] When we start taking our marriages for granted, problems arise. [00:17:20] We need to be building our marriages at all times. We need to Be working hard at living for each other, doing the things that make our marriages work. [00:17:29] You know, Karen and I. And I believe it's the way it should be that nothing comes between our relationships. Since the day we met and decided that we were going to get married. [00:17:41] It was. [00:17:42] I was a little more immature way back then. [00:17:46] First thing I said to her that I wouldn't say today is I said, okay, if we're going to make this work, there's two things you need to know. [00:17:54] I have no money and I'm the boss. [00:17:59] And she was wise enough to know, we'll see about that. But she said she kept going. So I thought, wow, this is going to be all right. [00:18:09] It doesn't take long to learn. [00:18:11] I had no money and I wasn't the boss. [00:18:18] But the marriage, nothing. That's what I was going to. With all that, nothing comes between us. [00:18:26] Our careers. We never put our careers between each other. If we didn't agree on it, we didn't do it. We didn't both feel good about it. We held off on it. [00:18:35] We never had any relationships, never came between us. All the times in the hours that I spent at school would not come between our relationship. [00:18:44] And, you know, nothing, not even our kids could come between us. They had to see us as one flesh that's healthy for our kids. [00:18:54] We can't let anything come between us. And we have to work on our relationships. We have to build our relationships. [00:19:01] And if we neglect, if we're negligent in building our relationships with people, building our relationships, our relationship with the Lord in our spiritual walk, if we're negligent in our marriages. [00:19:14] When the winds come and the rains blow, or the rains come and the winds blow, our houses will come down with a mighty crash. [00:19:22] And we see it. And it's sad. It is so sad. We cannot be negligent in these things. In our lives, the Holy Spirit stirs us, stirs a desire within us to seek God's will. It's him stirring it in us. Don't take it for granted. Guiding us in decisions and illuminating the paths that honor God. [00:19:45] These convictions are meant to draw us closer to God, lead us to repentance and help us to grow in our faith. [00:19:55] Cause us to reflect on the character of Christ in our lives. [00:19:59] And that is what we're talking about here this morning. [00:20:03] James emphasizes that merely listening isn't enough. [00:20:08] Just simply hearing the spoken word or the quickened word that says, oh, man, that's spoken right to me. That's exactly what I needed to Hear with no application creates a dangerous illusion that thinking that we're aligned with God's will when we're not, that's a scary place to be. [00:20:26] We can be experts in hearing, but it's the doing that counts. [00:20:32] This kind of self deception is subtle and it can creep in without us even realizing it. [00:20:39] James likens it to a person who looks at himself in a mirror and quickly noting a flaw, but then choosing to ignore it entirely, walking away, forgetting what he saw without taking steps to address it. [00:20:52] The challenge this morning is profound. [00:20:56] God is inviting us to engage with His Word in a way that his transformation takes place in our lives. [00:21:04] James works to help his readers to understand that true faith is demonstrated through what we do. [00:21:11] And as we listen and absorb the teachings of Scripture, by the enlightening power of the Holy Spirit, actively, prayerfully allowing the Holy Spirit to grow in us ways, we embody those principles in our daily lives, you know. So the call to action here this morning is clear. [00:21:35] Whoever looks intently into the perfect law which gives freedom and continues to do it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do. [00:21:48] It is as we are engaging deeply with God's word, reading it, meditating on it, learning what it is saying in context with the rest of Scripture, that we start to experience real freedom, freedom that comes from obedience. [00:22:05] The perfect law reflects God's will and guides us into righteous living. [00:22:11] Now, the map cannot be our guide if we don't follow it. [00:22:16] And likewise we cannot enjoy freedom, the freedom of walking the path that God has set out for each one of us, before each one of us, without actively applying his word to our lives. [00:22:31] If Joshua is going to succeed with leading the children of Israel across into the promised land, he was given a challenge. [00:22:39] And he says that he was to be strong and courageous because he will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. [00:22:48] And we are being challenged this morning to be strong and courageous. [00:22:54] Romans 8:31 is such an exhortation to us that if God be for us, who can be against us? [00:23:05] God said to Joshua, be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful in everything you do, wherever you go. [00:23:20] And notice this same challenge from James here it says, but whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do. [00:23:36] Joshua, God says, keep this book of the law always on your lips, meditating on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. [00:23:48] This was the instruction for success that Joshua was given by God to get those Israelites into that promised land. And it's the same instruction that James is giving us for success us. [00:24:01] It is a continual reflection on God's word, which is the tool that God has given us that produces transformation. [00:24:10] And we must embrace this gift. [00:24:12] We must always keep in mind that apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. [00:24:17] And God is leading us. Just as he led the children of Israel out of Egypt, he's leading us out of the bondage of carnal thinking and into spirit. A spirit led life. [00:24:31] Remember when Jesus what Jesus said in John 15:5, I am the vine and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing. [00:24:45] So, okay, we hear the challenge and we are to be doers of the quickened word that God has spoken to us. [00:24:54] And this is where we need to recognize our need to come to Jesus to teach us. [00:25:00] We can come to him and be comforted to know that Jesus is the best teacher that you'll ever have. [00:25:07] He says, take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. [00:25:13] He's a great one to go to for teaching. And it's amazing. If you take your scriptures, you spend time in prayer and you spend time on your knees, then spend time in the Scriptures. It's amazing. After a time in prayer in the presence of the Lord and start reading your scriptures, that scriptures, they come alive. Like it makes such a difference. I find that if I spend time in prayer before I start reading the Scriptures, because Scriptures are spiritually discerned. It says that in First Corinthians, chapter 2, Jesus himself, he fulfilled the law perfectly in his obedience. [00:25:50] And this has been accredited to us. Okay, that's not the issue here. Jesus has taken care of all of that on our behalf. And just as his righteousness was exchanged for our sin at the cross, also the Holy Spirit lives in the believer and works to shape us into Christ's image, making his yoke easy and his burden light. [00:26:12] This is not meant to be heavy. You know that we got to do everything that that's in this book. Like, that's what you call bondage, and that's what the enemy would love you to think. But what we're talking about here this morning Is when God's speaking to you and he nudges you, he gives you a truth. On a Sunday morning or on a Tuesday evening prayer meeting, when Paul's exhorting a prayer exhortation of some kind, when there's a nudge there, the Holy Spirit's spoken to you. That's the word that you take and you apply to your life. [00:26:46] Jesus says, why do you call me Lord, Lord, and not do the things that I say? One of the easiest places to get a hard heart is in the church. [00:26:57] And you say what? [00:26:59] That's true. [00:27:01] There's a proverb that says, because the same sun softens the wax, hardens the clay. [00:27:06] And this proverb shows a picture of how that the same circumstances can have different effects on different materials or different individuals. [00:27:16] And the same truth that transforms one life can cause another life to say, oh, I've heard that. Ah, that doesn't apply to me. And no change takes place in that individual's life. [00:27:29] If we hear the gospel over and over again and we don't respond to it, our hearts get hard, you know, and that's a very scary place to be. [00:27:40] You know, Like, I stand, I started out this morning saying that we all want to be blessed in all that we do. And we see that here that it is possible that we can be blessed in all that we do. [00:27:53] Hopefully, we've learned exactly how we can see that this can happen in every one of our lives. [00:27:58] And we have the challenge before us this morning that not only being a hearer of the Word, but rather being actively doing what God is speaking to each one of us through the preaching, the teaching, and the reading of the Scriptures. [00:28:13] And the main idea being that we cannot merely listen to the Word, but we also must take that living word that God is speaking to us and do what it says. [00:28:26] Faith is more than something of belief. It's something we do. [00:28:30] Now picture a man standing in a hospital room. And the doctor has just given him a clear diagnosis. [00:28:38] This is serious, but it's treatable. And then the doctor hands him a prescription. He says, if you take this every day, you will be healed. [00:28:48] And the man looks at him, he nods, he says, thanks his doctor, and he goes home. And he tells his family man, that's an amazing doctor. The prescription he gave me is exactly what I needed. He goes home and he puts that prescription on his kitchen fridge. That's where I put mine, under our magnet. And he reads it every morning. And he walks by it and he sees it when he's getting his Coffee. And weeks later, his condition worsens, his strength fades. And everyone around him, they're confused. And they say, man, you had the answer. Why didn't you take it? [00:29:18] And the tragic truth was that it wasn't that the doctor didn't tell him, and it wasn't that he never heard what he heard. [00:29:30] But that's exactly what James is telling us here this morning. [00:29:34] God has not hidden his will from us. [00:29:37] He's spoken. He clearly, lovingly, powerfully spoken through His Word to us. [00:29:42] You know, we can listen to sermons, we can underline verses, and we can say, that's exactly what I needed to hear. [00:29:48] But if it never goes from our ears to our hands, to our lives, James says we're deceiving ourselves. [00:29:59] And so with that, I'd like to have a stand and we'll close in prayer. And I want to leave you with a question. [00:30:08] What is the prescription that God has given you, that you've been walking by and not obeying? [00:30:16] Because God is always speaking to us. [00:30:19] Whether we're reading his scriptures or we're just coming to church on Sunday mornings, God is always speaking to us. [00:30:25] There's always a word for every one of us to take home and to be thinking about, to write down, to meditate on. [00:30:31] The Holy Spirit is alive and he's active and he's speaking and he's drawing and he's wanting to mature as saints. He wants us to be that light on a hill. [00:30:39] You know when you come over the hill at Innisfail at night, and you just come over that hill and you look over the valley and you can see right there, the light. The sky is lit up for a long ways. [00:30:50] That's us in this world. People see us, they notice us. They might not like us, some of them, but I'll tell you, some of. There's a lot of people looking for that light, looking for truth. You know what's causing that light to shine? You know they're going to get a little bit closer. [00:31:05] We're that light. And the Holy Spirit is trying to breathe life into us. And he breathes life into us by having his word come into our hearts. And as it comes into our heart and he challenges us. [00:31:34] That's when our light is shining bright. When we're walking in victory, we've got our head held high. We're confident because we know we're walking in the will of God in our lives. [00:31:43] And that's what we want. To be that light on a hill filled with the Spirit, doing what God has asked us to do. It's amazing what God could do if we would just surrender our lives 100% to him and then dare to pray for those people that don't know the Lord. [00:31:57] And they would say, wow, your God is alive. [00:32:03] So, Lord, we pray, Father, that you would help us to take your word, Lord God, that you speak to us into each one of our hearts, Lord, and to cherish that Father God, not to neglect it and make light of it. I pray that you'd help us, Lord God, to work the soil of our hearts. That these seeds would be planted into the soil and it would grow up and produce much fruit, Lord. It wouldn't land on rocky soil. [00:32:26] It wouldn't be choked out, Father God, by the cares and concerns of this world, but it would be healthy and strongly rooted, Lord, and grow up and be a healthy plant bearing much fruit. It thank you that you love us, Lord God, that you're drawing us, that you're teaching us and that you're maturing us and that you have a plan for each one of us. [00:32:45] And Lord, just help us to walk out the walk that you have before us. In Jesus name, Amen. God bless you as you go.
